Mold is no joke. It is a real issue that could affect the health of
you and your family. So much misinformation is out there that consumers
are making poor choices that could have long term effects. The first
thing consumers should know is that they should NOT listen to anyone
with a financial interest in a home they are buying when it comes to
their health or safety. Too many consumers just accept what they are
told about the homes they buy. That is their first mistake. Hiring a
company qualified to inspect for construction defects should be at the
top of your priority list. With issues such as mold in the news
daily, your concerns should be addressed by a company that knows both
construction and air quality issues. The majority of indoor air
quality problems, including mold, can be traced to construction
defects. That is a good reason to hire a company experienced in
both construction defect as well as air quality issues.
Toxic Mold:
This site was designed to help
provide Ohio consumers with a source of information concerning the
issues of mold and other indoor air contaminants which could
affect their health and the quality of the air they breathe. Being
involved in the building inspection profession for the past 12 years,
the construction industry for the past 25 years and the indoor air
quality profession for the past 8 years has given me the opportunity
to listen to and investigate a vast amount of information. The reason
for the design of this site was to provide information from reliable
sources for consumers so that intelligent decisions can be made
concerning the issue of Indoor Air Quality.
If you have experienced a leak in
your building, contact a professional investigator to protect your
interests. In many of the cases we have dealt with, our clients at
first relied on the integrity of their insurance adjuster. That may
not be your best course of action. Adjusters may not have your best
interests in mind when investigating a claim. Many of our clients have
already dealt with their insurers and have then called us. It is our
opinion that you should begin protecting your interests from day one
when dealing with a water damage claim. Some adjusters simply have no
experience or qualifications to deal with a biological contamination
problem. This is leading to escalated claim costs due to improper
clean-up methods being implemented. In many cases we have witnessed
adjusters taking up to a week to respond to a water damage claim.
Remember, biological contamination can begin in as little as 24 hours
after a leak. The time in which the problem is investigated is
critical in water damage claims. Isolating the affected area, removing
damaged non-porous materials if needed, correcting the source of the
water leak and implementing proper drying procedures can help to keep
a minor claim from becoming a major headache for all parties involved.
If you suspect that your home or
other building is contaminated, contact a reputable company to discuss
your concerns. If the company wants to begin testing immediately
without first performing a visual inspection of the site, find a new
company. A visual survey of the suspected building and a verbal
interview with the building occupants should be the starting point for
any meaningful investigation of an indoor air quality problem. If
yours is a commercial building it is a good idea to ask the building
manager or head maintenance person to be present at the visual survey
as well as company nurse if one is present. This will help the
investigator is formulating hypothesis regarding the situation.
